However, you do have to be careful, as some of the models in the 3D warehouse can have quite a large file size. My recommendation as you find models that you like is to create a collection and start saving models to it for easy access later.
This one is interesting because it brings the trees in as proxy objects in your model, meaning that you never actually see the geometry in your SketchUp model, but instead you just export it to a rendering program like Vray or Thea Render, and the rendering program renders the trees.
This avoids dealing with slow SketchUp models trying to render all the geometry from the branches and faces. The Horizon Offset allows you to manually lower the horizon line of the sky, which again affects the lighting and reflections in the scene, as you can see in the images below. In the VFBselect the Atmosphere render layer from the drop-down menu and you can see the effect by itself. Aerial Perspective is, in short, a volumetric effect that simulates the haze created by particles in the atmosphere that essentially make objects that are further away from the camera, appear to be brighter.
Open the rollout to access the settings. The Aerial Perspective extends too high into the sky and is scattering all the sunlight rays, essentially diffusing the shadows away. So, lower the Atmospheric Height to meters and the shadows return.
Now reduce the Visibility Range to intensify the haze effect, and settle on meters. Now since the Aerial Perspective is dependent on the sun and sky in the scene, any changes we make to the sun, such as intensity, direction, or color, will affect the atmosphere. Go ahead and move the sun direction by changing the time of day, and you can see how the atmosphere is affected. You can use the Inscattered Light Mult. V-Ray Next for SketchUp
I would try using a 2 sided material setup for your leaves. This is the most common approach. This tree model might also not be the best to get a really realistic looking tree as it seems to be low poly and the leaves and branches are mapped on to 2d planes. I would look into getting Transmutr and buy some trees from a model provider and create proxies. Laubwerk is also another solution. Their trees come into SketchUp as very low poly placeholders and have many options for size, look, and the best part is that the materials are already setup for VRay.

Hi Matthew You are right, that this is not the best tree to get realistic results - actually I thought that the leaves where 3d, and not textures when I bought it don't know how to ensure that the next time I have changed the leaves material to a twosided material, and it sure looks better, when there is only a few amount of leaves.
But when there is more leaves, I still think the shadows looks to dark. Could it be a render setting that need to be changed diffuse lightning?

V-Ray doesn't read the alpha channel from PNG images, so it need to be separate. I can't even find the PNG file from these trees. The 2D might be possible with Photoshop, but how would you extract from the 3D tree? What the images used in them is needed is a clip map if you can get the original png files, you can create these clips easily in PS.
I got them either from here, the internet or the warehouse. But my point is how can you extract the PNG or the alpha channel from these sketchup files.
Save the file to disk and open in your image editor of choice to extract the alpha channel. Be in the list of materials.
Not in edit mode. The "Select" tab next to "Edit". I learned something new. I got the alpha channel out of the tree now. Do you know how to make it work in Vray? But when I render in Vray it's not working So, just extract the alpha channel from the original texture as Thom described. Render and this solves it.
